When we look back in our lives, we often see the places where we should have taken a different path. We see the mistakes we made. And we often wish we could go back and give our younger selves some advice so things could turn out differently.

You can’t go back but you can take the advice you’d give your younger self and give it to your kids. Even if it seems like they’re not listening, your words just might stick somewhere in their mind or heart and cause them to make a better decision one day.

Here are 11 pieces of younger-self advice to get you started.

Follow your heart and focus on your own happiness

Parents, partners, friends, extended family… there are plenty of people in our lives who will try to tell us what we should do. They think we should make more money, settle down and have a family, go to college, travel the world, grow up, stay young as long as we can. The list is endless and it’ll be maddening if you try to do what everyone tells you to do.

Instead, follow your heart. Focus on your own happiness. Do what you want to do. In the end…
