Single Parent Shockers: 13 Surprising Things About Being a Single Parent

I talked to a bunch of single parents to find out what the biggest shocks were when they went from parenting together to solo parenting.

My oldest child was not quite three-years-old when his father and I divorced. My youngest was less than a month old. I’ve been a single parent for what amounts to their whole lives. While I was married, their father was not a very involved parent, so the switch from married mom to single mom didn’t really feel like anything changed.

So I decided to talk to some other single parents and find out what they thought the biggest shock was when they went from partnered to single. Some of their shockers were good and some were more negative. That fits with parenting in general, though, doesn’t it?

A couple of things to note:

· I have not used names, mainly because each answer was mentioned by multiple parents

· While many of these answers came from multiple parents, it is important to remember that everyone’s experience is unique
