Protecting Yourself When Getting Divorced
Divorce is a process and sometimes you might want to give up on it
When I got divorced, I got lucky. I was able to push it through in a little over two months. Most divorces take six months to a year at a minimum. Many take even longer. And it’s the length of time that often makes people agree to less than they want or deserve. They just want to get their divorce over with and be free.
But regardless of how long your divorce is taking, there are a few things you should keep in mind before you agree to a settlement that might not be in your best interests later. Of course, none of this is legal advice and you should always talk to your lawyer before doing anything.
Find a divorcing friend
This may be easier said than done but see if you can find someone who is getting divorced along the same timeline as you are. Obviously, it won’t be exact as each individual divorce moves at its own pace. But if you can find a friend who is getting divorced at roughly the same pace as you, or even a little ahead of or behind you in the process, it can feel a lot easier.
