Meditation Is Freedom, Not a Chore

I, and most meditation teachers, recommend daily meditation. Meditation is a practice so of course that means the more often you do it, the better you’ll be at it and the more benefits you’ll receive from it. But meditation is freedom. Meditation is not a chore.

Meditation should not feel like a chore. If it does, take a break.

Yes, that’s right. I teach meditation and I’m telling you that you should take a break from it.

It’s okay to skip a day or two

I woke up on a recent Saturday morning feeling really ill. My lower back ached, my stomach was cramping, and I felt like I was going to vomit. I’d gone out to lunch the day before with my significant other and my first thought was food poisoning.

Whatever it was, it eventually eased up and I felt better. But the idea of trying to sit and clear my mind to meditate while feeling that way? It was a no go. So I skipped my meditation that Saturday. And as you can see, I’m still here to tell you about it.

A few days later, I had inherited my son’s cold. My nose was alternating between clogged and running, my body ached, my head throbbed, and all I wanted to do was lie in bed and sleep. I didn’t meditate for three days.
