Maybe It’s Time to Honor Your Feelings Instead of Avoid Them
You might have been taught to avoid or ignore your emotions but that’s not doing you any favors
“You’re overreacting.”
“Stop being so dramatic.”
“How can you be so _____ about that?”
How often have you heard something like that? Or maybe you’ve been told that you needed to go to your room if you were going to cry or yell, or to “suck it up.” Maybe they just flat out told you that whatever you were feeling wasn’t valid, acceptable, or tolerable in their world.
It might have been your parents. Or it might have been a romantic partner. Maybe a sibling or a friend. But we’ve all got someone who made us feel uncomfortable with admitting and expressing our feelings. And that led to hiding and avoiding emotions.
Everyone experiences emotions but sometimes they are certainly challenging. Some folks probably wish that they didn’t have to experience their emotions at all!
