I’ve practiced meditation for 20 years and I’ve taught it for the last 3–4 years. I truly love the practice and all that it does for me. I list the benefits to anyone who will listen and encourage everyone from the smallest child to the oldest adult to give it a try.

But here’s a secret about me and my meditation practice: some days, it’s hard.

Some days, I don’t have time to meditate as long as I’d like. Other days, I’m too distracted, anxious, tired, or something else to really sit and focus. And sometimes, as much as I hate to admit it, meditation just ends up feeling like a chore.

But here’s the thing I’ve learned: when those things are true, I need to do something different.

If you’re having difficulty meditating, you may be pushing yourself too hard. You’ll often get better results by learning to lighten up. These are some techniques for relaxing both your body and mind while meditating.
