Self-improvement, personal growth, personal development — there are lots of names for it, but they all come down to one thing: changing yourself. It’s change for the better, but it’s still change. And change, specifically change that makes you better, can be a great thing.

But for today, let’s turn the focus away from making yourself better. What about the person you are right now? Isn’t she pretty amazing already?

Let go of who you think you should be

I remember being a teenager with my whole life planned out. I knew what career path I was going to follow. I was going to get married first, then have three kids, a boy, a girl, and another boy — in that order. I knew where I was going to live, what my future husband was going to look like, and how my kids were going to get along with each other.

Now I’m 41. The career path I planned to follow didn’t go quite the way I dreamed, and now I’m on a different, yet just as exciting and pleasurable one. I’m divorced, and one of the only two kids I had was on his way before the wedding. I don’t live quite where I imagined, and my ex-husband looked nothing like my fantasy…
