We talk a lot about improving our relationships with others. Making our romantic relationships better, being happier with family, or more present with friends. These external relationships, as meaningful as they may be, aren’t the most important one in our lives.

The most important relationship in our life is the one we have with ourselves.

We are alone with ourselves in the middle of the night. We’re there with ourselves at the end of every romantic relationship, every friendship, every family relationship that goes wrong. We’re there through job changes, big moves, marriage, divorce, kids, and every other thing that ever happens in our lives.

We’re there with ourselves at the end of our lives — quite possibly with no one else there.

Because of that, a healthy, loving relationship with ourselves is critical. How do we know if we have a good relationship with ourselves? And how can we build a better one if we don’t?

I have several things you can look at to both evaluate your relationship with yourself, and build a better one if you find it’s lacking.
