As we get ready to ring in a new year, the usual excitement that comes with this day is tinged with a feeling of relief that 2020 is over and a hint of concern over what 2021 might have in store. After a year filled with stress, anxiety, confusion, and enormous unexpected changes, all most of us want is a quiet year filled with happiness.

Of course, that could be said about any year. Any day, even. We all just want to be happy.

Think about it … every single thing we do is intended to make us happier.

And yet sometimes we get diverted and do things that actually move us away from this goal. We do things we think we should do because others tell us to or we see a shiny object and think it can bring us the happiness we seek more quickly or easily.

And sometimes it’s not our fault when unhappiness comes calling. After all, we don’t go out seeking a pandemic, a breakup, or depression or anxiety so we can feel miserable. Yet sometimes they happen and when they do, we drop into unhappiness and might even wonder if we’ll ever feel happy again.
