8 Steps to Real Connection on a First Date

Falling in love on the first date might not be possible, but a real connection is.

First dates are often described as awkward, uncomfortable, nerve-wracking, or intimidating. You’re meeting a stranger, hoping for friendship at a minimum and true love at best. You have to decide, after just a couple of hours with this person, if you want to see them again — and vice versa.

Nerves can really get in the way. When you’re nervous, you’re more likely to resort to small talk, laugh too loudly or not at all, avoid eye contact, and try too hard to make a good impression. You end the date feeling certain you like your date, but wondering how they could possibly like you.

Worse, you can leave the date feeling like you didn’t make a connection. And if you didn’t make a connection, the chances of a second date are slim. That connection is what makes people want to see each other again, so it’s important to make sure you encourage it.
