If you go looking for parenting advice, you’ll find plenty of it. Ranging from old school ideas like needing to spank kids to new school ideas like every child should get a trophy, there’s more than enough to choose from.

But if you really want to raise kids who become adults you’re proud of, it starts when they’re little and has nothing to do with spankings or trophies.

Instead, it’s about the behaviors you model and the things you teach them.

Be kind and loving

If you want your kids to be kind and loving adults, you need to be a kind and loving adult. This goes beyond merely being kind and loving to your children and family.

You need to show them the example of being kind and loving to everyone, even those you’re not particularly fond of or complete strangers.

Kind and loving also means being respectful, honest, generous, and helpful.

Be respectful of your ex. Be generous and helpful by offering to pick up some groceries for a neighbor or giving them a ride. Be honest when something is bothering you.
