I’m as guilty as the next person of asking people “What should I do?” There are some tough decisions we have to make and sometimes it’s nice to hear another person’s perspective. And as a single mom, decision fatigue can easily set in and make us feel a sense of relief about letting another person make a decision for us.

But while you won’t be forever changed by tonight’s dinner if you ask someone else what you should make, there are some decisions that will change your life forever. And in those cases, the decision absolutely needs to be yours and yours alone.

Whether to have a kid

Whether it’s your first kid or your 15th, the decision to have a child is very personal. It’s based on your energy levels, time management skills, finances, and whether you want a child. You are the one who has to live with raising a child if you have one or the regret of not having one if you don’t.

Asking a friend or relative if you should have another child is like asking them if you should eat pizza for dinner. It has no impact on them at all and their answer is more likely to be based on their craving for pizza (or a child) than what…
